Crispina, Augusta, 178-182. Aureus (Gold, 21 mm, 7.31 g, 7 h), struck under Marcus Aurelius and Commodus, Rome, 180-182. CRISPINA AVGVSTA Draped bust of Crispina ro right. Rev. VENVS• FELIX Venus seated to left, holding Victory in her right hand and scepter with her left; below stool, dove standing left. BMC 47 (Commodus). Cohen 39. Calicó 2377c. RIC 287 (Commodus). Very rare. About extremely fine.

From the Trausnitz Collection, ex LHS 95, 25 October 2005, 826 and G. Hirsch 193, 19 February 1997, 80, from the ESR Collection, Hess-Leu (17), 23 March 1961, 235, and Ars Classica 13, 27 June 1928, 1370.

Crispina was the wife of Commodus and came from a consular family. Her father, Gaius Bruttius Praesens, was a distinguished senator and a friend of Marcus Aurelius and they undoubtedly decided that Crispina would be an excellent match for Commodus. Unfortunately, he apparently disliked her and after the conspiracy of Lucilla in 181/2, she was exiled and probably executed (coins in her honor cease to be issued in 182).
