CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 240-228 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 20 mm, 6.54 g, 9 h), Xenokrates. ΞΕ-ΝΟΚΡΑ/Τ-ΗΣ Armored cavalryman, riding horse moving to left, raising his right hand in salute and turning his bearded and laureate head to face the viewer; in upper field to right, monogram and pileus. Rev. ΤΑΡΑΣ Phalanthos, nude, riding dolphin to left, his body turned slightly back to right, holding a trident over his right shoulder in his right hand and holding his drapery in his upraised left; to right, monogram of ΣΩ; below, waves and cuttlefish. HN III 1058. SNG ANS 1258. Vlasto 957. A splendid, lustrous and sharp example, with an exceptionally fine obverse in high relief. Very minor striking flatness on the reverse, otherwise, good extremely fine.

ΞΕ-ΝΟΚΡ / ΑΤ-ΗΣ Armored cavalryman, riding horse moving to left, raising his right hand in salute and turning his bearded head, with wildly flowing hair, to face the viewer; in upper field to right, monogram of ΤΚΡ. Rev. ΤΑΡΑΣ Phalanthos, nude, riding dolphin to left, his body slightly turned back to right, holding a trident over his right shoulder in his right hand, and holding his drapery, flowing from the back of the dolphin and behind Phalanthos, in his upraised left. Cf. HN III 1058, SNG Paris 2058, and Vlasto 955-961 n (but all with a pileus on the obverse and a monogram on the reverse, absent here). Apparently an unknown variety. A lovely, sharp and most attractive piece. Good extremely fine.

Bareheaded, bearded and armored military leader riding horse galloping to right, his head and torso facing and his right arm stretched out to left, holding Nike crowning him to right; in field to left, monogram of ΕΠΙΚ; below horse, KAΛΛIKPA / THΣ. Rev. TAPAΣ Taras astride dolphin to left, holding, in his right hand, Nike crowning him to right, and, in his left, an ornamental trident; to right, monogram of NE. HN III 1059. SNG ANS 1260. SNG Paris 2059. Vlasto 965. A lovely, high relief example, sharply struck from fresh dies. Good extremely fine.
