THESSALY. Pharsalos. Mid-late 5th century BC. Hemidrachm (Silver, 16 mm, 2.82 g, 4 h). Head of Athena to right, wearing an earring and a crested Attic helmet. Rev. Φ-AR Horse's head to right within incuse square. BCD Thessaly II 630. Cf. Lavva 12-5 (dies not recorded). Expressive horse head. Lightly porous, otherwise, very fine.

The "expressive horse head", so rightly noticed by our cataloguer, reminds us that Pharsaliote horses were famous in antiquity for their acting abilities! This horse may well be one who was famous for taking roles in Sophocles.
