Lot 205

YUEH-CHI, Sogdiana. Circa 130-80 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 31 mm, 14.43 g, 12 h), imitating issues of Eukratides I of Baktria. A diademed and draped bust of Eukratides to right, wearing Macedonian helmet adorned with bull's horn and ear, but of a rather crude and barbarized style. Rev. ΒΛΕΙΛΕΩΣ ΜΕΓΛVΟV - ΕVΙΙΑΤΙΔΟV The Dioscouri, each holding palm branch and lance, galloping on horseback to right; below, monogram. For the prototype, see: Bopearachchi I 54, Mitchiner 178c, and SNG Copenhagen 274; for similar imitations, see: Bopearachchi-Ur Rahman 284 and Mitchiner 496 (but both with different obverses and cruder reverses). Very well-struck and unusually well-preserved. Edges hammered in antiquity, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the Trausnitz Collection, bought from Münzhandlung Athena on December 1998.

For the prototype of this coin, see the preceding lot.
