PERSIA, Alexandrine Empire. Time of Stamenes - Seleukos, satraps of Babylon, circa 328-311 BC. Stater (Silver, 23 mm, 16.96 g, 4 h), Babylon. Baal seated to left on backless throne, bare from the waist but with drapery over his left shoulder, holding scepter in his right hand and resting his left on the throne. Rev. Lion walking to left; above, spearhead to left. BMC Arabia, etc., p. 181, 4 and pl. XX, 17. Nicolet-Pierre 2. Pozzi 2868. Traité II 766. A scarce variety, struck on a broad flan and with a lion that is closely related to those in Assyrian and Babylonian art, rather than Greek. Good very fine.
