Lot 196

KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Hemiobol (Silver, 8 mm, 0.46 g, 6 h), uncertain eastern mint, probably Babylon. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. Club and bow in bowcase; monogram to left. Cf. Price 4012-15. Good very fine.

The reverse iconography is a proof of our correct identification as "hemiobols" of the bronze series with the weapons of Herakles. This is a very rare, high grade and simultaneously a totally academic and extremely interesting piece. What the writer means here is that bronzes with the same types can be identified as hemiobols since this silver piece, which has the same types, is a hemiobol by weight.
