Lot 187

CYPRUS. Uncertain mint. Circa 500/490-480/475 BC. Double Siglos (Silver, 20 mm, 10.41 g, 2 h), possibly issued by Kourion. Head of a lion with open jaws to right. Rev. A-Pa (in Cypriot Syllabic script) Octopus; all shallow incuse square. Apparently unpublished, for similar but probably very slightly later issues, see: A. Destrooper-Georgiades [ADG], Note sur les monnaies trouvées en 1991 près d'Alyki à Larnaca, BCH 119, 2 (1995), p. 632, 2 (lion's head to right) and 3-11 (lion's head to left), and P. Dikaios, Silver Cypriot Staters from Larnaca, NC 1935, 553 (lion's head to right = ADG 2) and 547-552 (lion's head to left: included within ADG3-11). Extremely rare and exciting. Struck on a very oddly-shaped flan, and with traces of corrosion and horn silver, otherwise, good very fine.

From a German collection, formed before 2005.
