Lot 134

IONIA. Uncertain mint. Circa 600-550 BC. One twenty-fourth stater (Electrum, 6.5 mm, 0.59 g), Lydo-Milesian standard, Miletos (?). Lion's head with open jaws to left; behind, either a crude fish- or seal-like figure with pellets below (or possibly a devolved lion's shoulder and foreleg). Rev. Incuse square with a cruciform design of four large, oblong globules, each surmounted by a pellet. Apparently unpublished, but see Bodenstedt, Phokaia 13 for a very similar, but far more stylistically able, 1/24th stater with, however a greatly differing reverse punch. For a similarly crudely, bold 1/24th, see CNG 90, 2012, 604. Possibly unique. An extraordinarily boldly designed piece, with a very powerful lion of ferocious aspect. Extremely fine.

From the Trausnitz Collection, acquired from Athena GmbH on 21 July 2010.

One wonders whether this type could be an imitation of a contemporary issue of Phokaia, minted by an uncertain authority in the general area of Ionia and Lydia.
