GERMANY. Nuremberg (?). 1697. 1/2 Ducat (Gold, 17 mm, 1.73 g, 12 h), on the Peace of Rijswijck. QVOC VNQ, VOLVERIT, INCLINABIT. PR: 21 Eagle perching on a lily plant to left, plucking the petals. Rev. ELEVABIT CONTRA TE CLYPAEVM. EZECH. 26 Armored arm emerging from clouds to right, the hand holding a shield, bearing the arms of Austria-Old Burgundy, before the sun. Julius I, 445. An unusual medallic 1/2 ducat with interestingly symbolic types. Very fine.

From the Trausnitz Collection, ex Hess Divo 313, 4 May 2009, 547.

The Peace of Rijswijck, between France and the Empire, ended one of the constant wars between those two opponents. On the obverse, we see the Hapsburg arms shutting off the sun; a symbol of France, and Louis XIV in particular. On the reverse, the Imperial eagle is tearing apart a lily - another symbol of France!
