Manuel I Comnenus, 1143-1180. Aspron Trachy (Electrum, 33 mm, 4.18 g, 6 h), First coinage, Constantinople, 1143-1152 (?). IC XC / O EMMANOYHΛ (across the fields) Bust of Christ Pantocrator facing, wearing cross nimbus, his right hand raised in blessing and holding book of Gospels in his left. Rev. ΜΑΝVΗΛ - ΔϵCΠΟΤ / ΜΡ On the left, Manuel, standing facing holding labarum-headed scepter in his right hand and anexikakia in his left, and with a collar piece containing five jewels; on the right, the Virgin, standing facing on the right, raising her right hand to crown the emperor. DOC 2a. SB 1957. An attractive example, toned and clear, struck on a particularly broad flan. Nearly extremely fine.
