Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus, with Romanus I, 913-959. Solidus (Gold, 20 mm, 4.39 g, 6 h), Constantinople, 921-923. +IhS XPS REX REႺNANTIႷM✳ Christ, nimbate, seated facing on throne, raising right hand in benediction and, with his left hand, holding Book of Gospels on his left knee. Rev. ROmAn’ ЄT COnSτAnτ’ AЧςς’ Ь’ Crowned facing busts of Romanus on left, with slight beard and wearing loros, and Constantine, beardless and wearing chlamys holding patriarchal cross between them. DOC 4. Füeg 4. SB 1746. Very rare. Very fine.

From the Trausnitz Collection, acquired from Athena Münzhandlung on 4 October 1983.

Constantine VII had one of the longest reigns in Byzantine history, though for much of it he was only a co-emperor with the official regent, Romanus I. In fact, Romanus did his best to keep Constantine VII away from all power. This was the first of their joint issues and is quite rare.
