Magnentius, 350-353. Centenionalis (Bronze, 24 mm, 5.19 g, 6 h), Aquileia, 3rd officina (T), 350-351. D N MAGNENTIVS P F AVG Bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust of Magnentius to right; behind, A. Rev. GLORIA ROMANORVM / A / AQT· Magnentius standing left, with foot set upon seated captive to left, holding labarum with a Christogram in his left hand and being crowned by Victory standing on a globe held in his right; to right, another captive kneeling to left, clutching the emperor's leg in supplication. Bastien 307. LRBC 896. RIC 148. Dark green patina. Good very fine.

From the Trausnitz Collection, ex Giessener Münzhandlung 71, 3 May 1995, 876.

A scarce type from early in Magnentius’ reign when he was still confident about the chances of his claim to the throne being successful. While he was of Germanic descent, the usurper presents himself here as a strong Roman leader capable of defending the borders and restoring the empire’s glory.
