Aurelian, with Vabalathus, 270-275. Antoninianus (Bronze, 20 mm, 3.18 g, 12 h), Antioch, H = 8th officina, November 270-March 272. IMP C AVRELIANVS AVG / H Radiate and cuirassed bust of Aurelian to right. Rev. VABALATHVS V C R IM D R Laureate, diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Vabalathus to right. BN 1258-61. RIC 381. Sharply struck and well-centered and much nicer than usual. Extremely fine.

From the Trausnitz Collection, ex Lanz 114, 26 May 2003, 711.

The plain diadem that adorns Vabalathus' head below the laurel wreath is often not mentioned in coin descriptions. Perhaps it is not clear on many examples, or maybe it is just that many cataloguers see it as part of the laurel wreath. Here, however, it is quite clear and distinct.
