Q. Caecilius Metellus Pius Scipio, 47-46 BC. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 4.13 g, 11 h), military mint in Africa. Q.METEL / PIVS Laureate head of Jupiter to right, of archaic style. Rev. SCIPIO / IMP Elephant walking to right. Babelon (Caecilia) 47. Crawford 459/1. CRI 45. Sydenham 1050. Well struck and nicely centered. Minor porosity, otherwise, good very fine.

From the Trausnitz Collection, ex Künker FPL June/July 2008, 12, and from the Barry Feirstein Collection Part IV, Numismatica Ars Classica 45, 2 April 2008, 20, originally acquired from CNG.

Known as Metellus Scipio, the issuer of this coin was a supporter of Pompey in the war against Caesar. Initially successful in Africa, when Caesar arrived he was defeated at Thapsus in 46. While he escaped the battle his fleet was destroyed by Publius Sittius at Hippo Regius and he then committed suicide.
