L. Aemilius Lepidus Paullus, 62 BC. Denarius (Silver, 19.5 mm, 3.75 g, 6 h). PAVLLVS LEPIDVS CONCORDIA Diademed and veiled head of Concordia to right. Rev. PAVLLVS TER On the right, L. Aemilius Paullus, togate, standing left, erecting trophy for his victory over the Macedonians at Pydna in 168 BC; to left, the captive Macedonian King Perseus and his two sons standing right. Babelon (Aemilia) 10. Crawford 415/1. Sydenham 926. Light porosity, otherwise, very fine.

From the Trausnitz Collection, ex G. Hirsch 187, 19 September 1995, 854.

This coin commemorates the victories of the moneyer’s supposed ancestor, L. Aemilius Paullus (in fact they were only vaguely related). The word TER on the reverse refers to L. Aemilius Paullus’ three triumphs: in Spain in 190, Liguria in 181 and at the famous battle of Pydna in 168, when the Romans extinguished the independent Macedonian kingdom.
