Hammer Price:  750 CHF
Lot 482

L. Cossutius C.f. Sabula, 72 BC. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 3.71 g, 6 h). SABVLA Head of the Medusa to left, winged and hair bound by serpents. Rev. L · COSSVTI · C · F Bellerophon riding Pegasus to right; behind, XXI. Babelon (Cossutia) 1. Crawford 395/1. Sydenham 790. With an obverse of particularly fine style, providing an elegant vision of the Medusa. Light deposits, otherwise, good very fine.

From the Trausnitz Collection, ex Lanz 68, 6 June 1994, 302.

For such a frightening creature noted for her hideousness, the portrait of Medusa on this coin, especially as it is enhanced by the lovely iridescent tones, is quite astounding.
