Lot 366

PERSIA, Alexandrine Empire. Uncertain satraps of Babylon, circa 328-311 BC. Stater (Silver, 24 mm, 16.65 g, 6 h), Babylon. Baaltars seated left, holding scepter in right hand and resting his left on the throne; to left, M. Rev. Lion walking left; above, Γ. Cf. Nicolet-Pierre 8 and 9 (8 lacking the M on obverse, and 9 with M but ΛΥ in place of Γ on reverse). Light porosity, otherwise, very fine.

From the Trausnitz Collection, ex Lanz 86, 18 May 1998, 213.

There have been a number of new varieties that have appeared in the twenty-one years since Nicolet-Pierre's 1999 article "Argent et or frappés en Babylonie entre 331 et 311 ou de Mazdai à Séleucos" in Travaux Le Rider. This variety with the M before Baaltars' knee seems to be completely new as, at least as far as we can tell, no examples have appeared for sale in public auction. A new study of these coins, or at least an updated corpus, would be beneficial at this time.
