KINGS OF MACEDON. Amyntas III, 393-370/69 BC. Triobol (Silver, 13 mm, 1.72 g, 5 h), Pella. Head of youthful Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. AMYN-TA Eagle standing to left, head turned to right; all within a shallow incuse square. HGC 3.1, 830. SNG Alpha Bank 200. SNG ANS 94. SNG Copenhagen 513-514. Westermark 33. Rare. Porous, otherwise, good fine.

From the Trausnitz Collection, acquired prior to 2007.

Most of the known examples of the series, weighing between 1.20 and 1.30 g, are struck in debased silver and are considered diobols. The present example, with a weight of 1.79 g, is nevertheless part of a smaller group struck in fine silver and is considered a triobol or a debased tetrobol of the Thraco-Macedonian standard. Is it the purity of the alloy that determines the denomination, or is it always the same denomination but does the fineness indicate different periods of minting?.
