Ex H. J. Berk, B or B 178, March 2012, 47, from the collection of C. Peper, purchased for $15 from Burdette G. Johnson of St. Louis during the 1940s, previously very possibly from the collection of V. M. Brand (Johnson was involved in the dispersal of Brand material starting in the 1930s).
Christian Peper, 5 December 1910 - 11 July 2011, was a prominent St. Louis lawyer, and was both a member of the board and a major donor to the St. Louis Art Museum (SLAM). He was a friend of the historian Arnold Toynbee and used to like telling jokes in Latin.
