Trajan, 98-117. Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 2.67 g, 7 h), Rome, c. 107-111. IMP TRAIANO AVG GER DAC P M TR P Laureate bust of Trajan to right, aegis on far shoulder. Rev. COS V P P S P Q R OTPIMO PRINC / DAC CAP Dacia seated left atop pile of arms, resting head on right hand in attitude of mourning. Cohen 120. Cf. BMC 390. Cf. RIC 98. Woytek 283cC. Toned. Minor roughness. Very fine.

After his victories over the Dacians in fall 102 and spring 107 AD, Trajan represents the personification of the eastern province of Dacia as a female figure, mourning and seated on a characteristically Dacian pile of arms with hexagonal shields, spears and bent swords. This type struck in the emperor’s fifth consulate in 109 AD is part of a historically significant issue and perfectly shows the superb style of that time.
