C. Marius C.f. Capito, 81 BC. Denarius Serratus (Silver, 20 mm, 3.96 g, 12 h), Rome. CAPIT · XXXXIII Draped bust of Ceres to right, wearing grain wreath and earring; before head, lyre. Rev. C · MARI · C · F / S · C Plowman with yoke of two oxen to left; above, XXXXIII. Babelon (Maria) 9. Crawford 378/1c (citing a piece in Paris). Sydenham 744b. Nicely centered and lightly toned. Light scratch in obverse field, otherwise, good very fine.

From a Dutch collection, acquired from Freeman & Sear.

There are 152 numbered die pairs known for the coinage of C. Marius – the control system was very tight with both the obverse and reverse dies given the same number so that the pairs could be kept together and closely controlled. The total number of coins issued would have been at least 1.5 million.
