SYRIA, Decapolis. Philadelphia. Titus, 79-81. 1/3 Assarion (Bronze, 13 mm, 3.34 g, 12 h), dated ΓΜΡ (143) = 80/1. ΦΙΛΑΔΕΛΦΕΩΝ Helmeted and draped bust of Athena to right. Rev. L ΓΜΡ (date) within border of dots; the whole within laurel wreath. Rosenberger 12. RPC II 2111. Sofaer 5. Sp. Decapolis (Philadelphia) 2. Extremely rare, with only four specimens cited by RPC out of which only a single example appeared since the early 2000s. A fantastic example. Very fine.

Originally known as the Biblical city of Rabbah. It was also known as Rabbah of the Ammonites and was their capital city. The city would would later be renamed as Philadelphia under Ptolemy II Philadelphus. Eventually the city was included in the Decapolis in 63 BC under Roman rule.
