SYRIA, Seleucis and Pieria. Laodicea ad Mare. Time of Antoninus Pius, 138-161. 1/3 Assarion (Bronze, 12 mm, 2.11 g, 1 h). ΙΟΥΛΛΙEΩΝ ΤΩΝ ΚΑΙ ΛΑΟΔΙΚEΩΝ Draped bust of Artemis to right, with quiver over her right shoulder. Rev. Boar standing to right; above ΠA monogram. Unpublished in the standard references. Cf. RPC I S3 4443A, RPC III 3802 and RPC IV.3 Online 9812 (all with this obverse die, but with a differing monogram on the reverse). Possibly the best example known of this interesting series. With reddish surfaces. Reverse slightly mistruck, otherwise, good very fine.

The dating of this series is definitely problematic, as examples sharing the same obverse die have been assigned not only to one but to three (!) different RPC volumes. The date given in RPC I S3 is definitely incorrect, and we can at least be sure that this coin was minted in the 2nd century, rather than in the 1st.
