A unique Seleukid bronze

Starting Price: 100 CHF
Hammer Price:  460 CHF
Lot 394

SELEUKID KINGS OF SYRIA. Seleukos IV Philopator, 187-175 BC. (Bronze, 15 mm, 3.40 g, 11 h), Uncertain mint in Asia Minor(?). Jugate draped bust of the Dioskouroi to right, each wearing pileos with laurel wreath. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩ[Σ Σ]ΕΛΕΥΚ[ΟΥ] The Dioskouoi on horseback rearing right. HGC 9, -. SC -. Unpublished. Extremely rare and unique. Green patina. Surfaces a bit rough, light cleaning scratches on obverse, otherwise, very fine.

This interesting coin in the name of Seleukos appears to be completely unpublished and unique. It should perhaps be associated with Seleukos III, SC 937-8, which has an Apollo obverse and Dioskouroi reverse, but the engraving on that issue is stiff and quite unlike the animated engraving on this coin. In fact, the style of the Dioskoroi on this coin is more reminiscent of Brettian League silver issues (cf. Pfeiler, JNG 1964, pl. I, 5) than it is of other Seleukid issues, which is why we attribute it here to Seleukos IV rather than an earlier Seleukos.
