PHRYGIA. Apameia. Circa 100-50 BC. (Bronze, 21.5 mm, 7.50 g, 1 h), under the magistrate Kokos. Bust of Athena to right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet and aegis. Rev. AΠΑΜΕΩN / KΩKOY Eagle right, landing on maeander pattern; to either side, cap of the Dioscuri surmounted by a star; star above. BMC 78-82. SNG Copenhagen 161-162. Good solid strike and well centered with an attractive brown patina. Good very fine.

The name Kokos is not Greek; it is, in fact, probably Celtic or Galatian. It appears on coins from Ephesus, Apollonia in Karia, Sardes, and the Phrygian cities of Apameia and Hierapolis; they seem to be all different people. What is known is that one of them must be the famous Kokos O' Gelotopoios known from a reference in the Suda.
