Pentassarion (Bronze, 27 mm, 15.65 g, 1 h), Aurelius Gallus, legatus consularis, 201-203. •AY•K•Λ•CEΠ• CEVHPOC•Π Laureate head of Septimius Severus to right. Rev. YΠ AYP• ΓAΛΛOY NIKOΠOΛITΩ / ΠPOC I Youthful Dionysos, nude, standing facing with his head turned to left, pouring a libation from a kantharos held in his right hand and holding a filleted thyrsos in his left. AMNG I 1306. Sharp, attractive and with a dark black-green patina. Some minor cleaning marks, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the Vineyard Collection, bought privately from Peter Burbules in New York at the NYINC in December 1998.
