Pertinax, 193. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 2.53 g, 7 h), possibly struck very early in the reign of Septimius Severus, Rome. IMP CAES P HELV PERTIN AVG Laureate head of Pertinax to right. Rev. AEQVIT AV - G TR P COS II Aequitas standing front, head to left, holding scales in her right hand and a cornucopia with her left. BMC 15. Cohen 2. RIC 1a. An extraordinary and rare issue with an exceptional portrait. Good extremely fine.

Ex Tkalec, 17 May 2010, 249 (but with the legends incorrectly given).

This portrait on this coin is so unusual that it seems possible that it was actually struck under Septimius Severus (the reverse legend break, AEQVIT AV - C TR P, is almost never found on denarii definitely struck by Pertinax): the resemblance to the actual portraits of Severus is much stronger than it is to the usual portraits of Pertinax! In a way, this coin may have been part of an issue authorized by Severus in order to emphasize his connection to his murdered predecessor, by showing how similar they looked.
