KINGS OF THRACE. Lysimachos, 305-281 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 31 mm, 16.93 g, 3 h), Lysimacheia, circa 297/6-282/1. Diademed head of Alexander the Great to right with horn of Ammon over his ear. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ Athena seated to left on throne, resting her left elbow on her shield and holding Nike crowning the king’s name with her outstretched hands; behind, transverse spear with spearhead; in inner left field, monogram above lion’s head to left; on the throne, K•. Müller 47. Thompson -. Nicely toned and attractive. Good very fine.

The reverses of the tetradrachm coinage of Lysimachos from Lysimacheia have one rather interesting particularity: Athena’s spear very seldom has a point! This coin is one of the few exceptions.
