KINGS OF ARMENIA. Tigranes I, the God, 121-96 BC. Tetrachalkon (Bronze, 18 mm, 2.80 g, 1 h), Artaxata, under Tigranes II, circa 96 BC. Diademed and draped of Tigranes I to right, wearing tiara decorated with a star. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΜΕΓΑΛΟΥ ΤΙΓΡΑΝΟΥ ΘΕΟΥ Elephant, with raised trunk, walking slowly to left . ACV 145-6. CAA 143. Kovacs 54. Very rare. About very fine.

Upon his accession, Tigranes II had his father, Tigranes I, deified, striking a very rare series of coins to commemorate the event. The square form of the legend conforms to the legend arrangement in use on Parthian coinage, and is not surprising considering that Tigranes II began his reign as a vassal of Parthia.
