KINGS OF PERGAMON. Eumenes I, 263-241 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 31.5 mm, 17.14 g, 11 h), circa 255/0-241 BC. Laureate head of Philetairos to right. Rev. ΦΙΛΕΤΑΙΡΟΥ Athena enthroned left, crowning dynastic name with a wreath held in her right hand and resting left elbow on shield to right; spear in background; to outer left, ivy leaf upwards; in inner left field, Α; to right, bow. SNG BN1610. SNG von Aulock 1356. Westermark Group IV. Struck in high relief and with a portrait of fine style. Good very fine.

Although he never took the title, Eumenes I ruled the city of Pergamon and its subject territories as a king. After he succeeded his uncle Philetairos to the throne of Pergamon, perhaps with aid provided by the Ptolemies who were at war with the Seleukids, Eumenes threw off the Seleukid yoke. His reign was relatively peaceful afterwards - at least there is no mention of troubles in the literary record - although Gauls were marauding throughout the region.
