MYSIA. Lampsakos. Circa 190-85 BC. (Bronze, 11 mm, 1.39 g, 12 h). Bearded and ivy-wreathed head of Priapos to right, with his hair tied in a knot at the back of his head. Rev. ΛΑΜΨΑ within ivy wreath tied below. Baldwin, Lampsakos -. Cf. SNG Ashmolean 702. SNG BN 1253. A scarce issue; brown patina. Granular surfaces, otherwise, very fine.



The obverse depicts the god Priapos, Lampsakos' most famous son. It was said that he was born in the city, and as the god of viticulture, it is no wonder that Lampsakene wine was famous throughout the Mediterranean for its superb quality.
