Unusual 'Barbarous' Imitation

Starting Price: 75 CHF
Hammer Price:  260 CHF
Lot 691

KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Drachm (Silver, 18 mm, 34.07 g, 2 h), 'Barbarous' imitation. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΝ[Δ...] (sic) Zeus seated left, holding eagle in his right hand and scepter in his left; to left, monogram; below throne, B. Cf. Price B15. Sharply struck with excellent details. About extremely fine.

The course style and misspelling of Alexander's name show this to be what Price calls a 'barbarous' issue. Price distinguished between barbarous and imitative issues, noting that the latter were manufactured with the intent to defraud and are often plated, while the former, also often plated, are mere copies and were produced along the fringes of the Greek world.
