THRACE. Hadrianopolis. Gordian III, 238-244. Tetrassarion (Bronze, 25.5 mm, 11.10 g, 1 h). AYT K M ANT ΓOPΔIANOC A(YΓ) Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian III to right. Rev. ΑΔΡῙΑ-ΝΟ/ΠΟΛΕΙΤΩΝ Youthful Dionysos, holding thyrsos in his right hand, reclining to left, on the back of a panther walking to right. Varbanov 4004. Youroukova 482 (V231/R468). Green patina; unusual reverse depiction of Dionysos. Nearly very fine.

From the Vineyard Collection, ex Gorny & Mosch 122, 10-13 March 2003, 1724.

The way that Dionysos is shown on the back of the panther reminisces the famous classical tetradrachms of Mende, where the God of wine is depicted reclining on his faithful donkey.
