MOESIA INFERIOR. Nicopolis ad Istrum. Antoninus Pius, 138-161. (Bronze, 16 mm, 2.37 g, 12 h), struck under the governor, M. Antonius Zeno, 139-144. ΑY Τ ΑΙ ΑΔΡΙ ΑΝΤΩΝΕΙΝ Bare head of Antoninus Pius to right. Rev. HΓE ZENΩΝ ΝΕΙΚΟΠΟΛΕΙ Bunch of grapes on vine with large grape leaf partially obscuring the grape bunch. H&J 8.6.8.3 (same dies as illustrated). RPC -. Cf. Varbanov 2119-20 (legends). Green patina. Very fine.

From the Vineyard Collection, acquired in 2001.

This is an unusual depiction of the grape bunch showing a large grape leaf partly covering the grapes. Usually, in numismatic representation, when a grape leaf is shown on a vine with a grape bunch, it is small and in the field between the vine and the grapes. The depiction here is quite natural, more in keeping with how a bunch of grapes on a vine might actually appear to an observer. The engraver of the reverse die must have been at least a reasonably competent artist.
