CYCLADES, Melos. 3rd-1st century BC. (Bronze, 12.5 mm, 1.80 g, 6 h). Apple on stem. Rev. Kantharos within shallow circular incuse. BMC 16-9. Cf. HGC 6, 848 (with ethnic M-A). Joy 535b and 535c. Brown patina. Nearly very fine.

From the Vineyard Collection, ex Classical Numismatic Group 58, 19 September 2001, 524.

The choice of obverse type, a pomegranate, is a punning allusion to the city's name: pomegranate is melon in Greek. Most but not all coins from Melos carry the city ethnic on the reverse. Until the second century the coins used the Doric spelling, ΜΑΛΙΩΝ, and afterwards, the Attic, ΜHΛΙΩΝ.
