Starting Price: 150 CHF
Hammer Price:  950 CHF
Lot 335

CORINTHIA. Corinth. Circa 375-300 BC. Stater (Silver, 21 mm, 8.49 g, 3 h). Q below Pegasos flying left. Rev. Helmeted head of Athena to right; behind, kantharos and N. BCD Corinth 124 (this coin). Calciati 379. Ravel 1060. Gentle toning and well-centered. Very fine.

From the Vineyard Collection, and from the BCD Collection, Lanz 105, 26 November 2001, 124.

The kantharos was a small two-handled cup for drinking wine. Although metal examples have been found, most were made of pottery. Several spectacular examples with bases that deviate from the normal slender pedestal mount exist. These have the heads of satyrs, maenads and other gods as a base atop which rests the cup.
