ATTICA. Athens. 107/106 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 30 mm, 16.75 g, 12 h), New Style, struck under the magistrates Herakleides, Eukles and Diokles. Head of Athena Parthenos to right, wearing triple-crested Attic helmet adorned with Pegasos. Rev. Α-ΘΕ / HPA-KΛE/ΔHΣ /EYKΛHΣ / ΔIOK Owl standing facing on amphora; to right, winged Tyche standing to left, with her right hand set on an amphora; on amphora, A (= month 1); below amphora, ME (= contractor’s initials). Thompson 749a (this obverse die). Toned and elegant. Good very fine.

From the Vineyard Collection, ex Classical Numismatic Group 49, 17 March 1999, 493.

The appearance of a winged Tyche is quite unexpected: Thompson discusses the attribution on p. 275 and provides a reasonable explanation for its appearance. Anyone with access to a set of the LIMC might find it an intriguing subject to check out.
