KORKYRA. Korkyra. Roman rule, circa 229-48 BC. (Bronze, 18.5 mm, 6.42 g, 10 h). Korkyra Wreathed head of Dionysos to right. Rev. Amphora; above, grape bunch; in the left field, KOP monogram. BMC 423-4. HGC 6, 83 corr (kantharos). Joy 336. Dark green patina. Light deposits, otherwise, very fine.

Ex Classical Numismatic Group 61 (25 September 2002), 220 (part).

The kantharos was a small two-handled cup for drinking wine. Although metal examples have been found, most were made of pottery. Several spectacular examples with bases that deviate from the normal slender pedestal mount exist. These have the heads of satyrs, maenads and other gods as a base atop which rests the cup.
