Lot 226

Commemorative Series in the name of Roma, 348. Medallion (Bronze, 16.5 mm, 2.53 g, 7 h), Struck under Constantius II, Rome, 348. RO-MA Helmeted and draped bust of Roma to right. Rev. P R Constantius helmeted and in military dress, standing facing, his head turned to the right, holding spear in his right hand and resting his left on a shield at his side. LRBC 611. RIC VIII 104 (R4). Very rare and with a most attractive green patina. Extremely fine.

This attractive little 'medalet' must have been made for festivities held in Rome in 348, commemorating the 1100th anniversary of Rome's foundation; similar to those struck a century earlier by Philip I. Pieces like this would have been tossed to the crowds. For one of the festal coins struck to mark the consecration of Constantinople eighteen years earlier, see above, lot 223.
