MACEDON. Apollonia. Circa 279-200 BC. (Bronze, 23 mm, 8.59 g, 6 h). Wreathed head of Dionysos to right. Rev. ΑΠΟΛ-ΛΩΝΟΣ Amphora. AMNG III/2, 3. HGC 3.1, 456. SNG ANS 224-6. SNG Copenhagen 133. Green patina. Earthen deposits, otherwise, very fine.

From the Vineyard Collection, acquired in December 1999.

The majority of the coins of "Apollonia" are overstruck. As planchets were used for coins issued by Ptolemy Keraunos (SNG ANS 224-226), eldest son of Ptolemy I of Egypt, and for a limited time King of Macedon (281-279). These coins were wrongly attributed to Paroreia by misinterpretation of the monogram on the reverse. It has been supported that this type is actually the first and only issue of the pre-Roman Cassandreia.
