MACEDON. Aphytis. Circa 400-350 BC. (Bronze, 18 mm, 6.20 g, 3 h). Head of Zeus-Ammon facing slightly to to left. Rev. AΦΥ-ΤΑΙ-ΩΝ Kantharos. AMNG III/2, 5-6. HGC 3.1, 444. SNG ANS 211. Dark olive-green patina; very rare and desirable type. Very fine.

From the Vineyard Collection, ex Freeman & Sear, 14 May 1999, 42.

The kantharos was a small two-handled cup for drinking wine. Although metal examples have been found, most were made of pottery. Several spectacular examples with bases that deviate from the normal slender pedestal mount exist. These have the heads of satyrs, maenads and other gods as a base atop which rests the cup.
