Lot 1321

ISLAMIC, Umayyad Caliphate. Uncertain period (pre-reform), AH 41-77 / AD 661-697. Fals (Bronze, 18 mm, 3.70 g, 7 h), Arab-Byzantine type, imitating Constans II, Dimashq (Damascus). Byzantine-style emperor standing facing, holding long cross in right hand and globus cruciger in left; to left, standard above T or rose; Λ/Є/O to right. Rev. Large M; Kufic legends to left, right, and in exergue; monogram above, barred and inverted crescent below. Album 102. SICA I -. Superb dark brown patina with orange-earthen highlights. Perfectly centered and exceptional strike. Extremely fine.

A wonderful piece that is truly un-improvable. This cataloger has seen or handled many thousands of these coins, the majority of which are poorly struck and even more poorly preserved. Examples in good very fine condition are very scarce. Examples such as the present piece are once or twice in a lifetime.
