KINGS OF THRACE. Ketriporis, circa 356-352/1 BC. Chalkous (Bronze, 10 mm, 1.14 g, 1 h). Head of Dionysos to right, wearing ivy-wreath. Rev. KETPI Kantharos; to left, thyrsos; to right ivy leaf. HGC 3.2, 1709. Cf. Peter p. 144. Dark green patina. Nearly very fine.

From the Vineyard Collection, acquired late 1999.

The kantharos was a small two-handled cup for drinking wine. Although metal examples have been found, most were made of pottery. Several spectacular examples with bases that deviate from the normal slender pedestal mount exist. These have the heads of satyrs, maenads and other gods as a base atop which rests the cup.
