Aurelian, with Vabalathus, 270-275. Antoninianus (Bronze, 20 mm, 3.22 g, 11 h), Antioch, 2nd officina, November 270-March 272. IMP C AVRELIANVS AVG / B Radiate and cuirassed bust of Aurelian to right. Rev. VABALATHVS V C R IM D R Laureate, diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Vabalathus to right. BN 1241-3. RIC 381. Well struck, and with an impressive dark green glossy patina. Extremely fine.

The plain diadem that adorns Vabalathus' head below the laurel wreath is often not mentioned in coin descriptions. Perhaps it is not clear on many examples, or maybe it is just that many cataloguers see it as part of the laurel wreath. Here, however, it is quite clear and distinct.
