Elagabalus, 218-222. Denarius (Silver, 18.5 mm, 3.35 g, 6 h), Rome. IMP ANTONINVS PIVS AVG Laureate and draped bust of Elagabalus to right, with horn on forehead. Rev. SVMMVS SACERDOS AVG Emperor in Syrian priestly dress sacrificing left at tripod altar and holding branch. BMC -. Cohen - RIC -. RSC 276f (citing the Tinchant specimen). Extremely rare and desirable. Extremely fine.

Normally on this type there is a star in the left field of the reverse. Examples without the star seem to be the result of an engraver's error and are extremely rare. We could find only two examples selling at auction over the past 20 years, one from the Philip T. Ashton collection which appeared in Gemini XIV, 18 April 2018, 560, and realized USD $225 (excluding the buyer's premium), the other in CNG E171, 22 August 2007, 401, which realized USD $287 (also excluding the buyer's premium).
