CILICIA. Anazarbus. Severus Alexander, 222-235. Tetrassarion (Bronze, 27 mm, 12.09 g, 11 h). AYT K M CЄOY ALЄΞANΔPO-C Laureate and cuirassed bust of Severus Alexander to right. Rev. ANAZPBOY (MHT)POΠΟΛЄOC / CЄY-HPЄIA / ЄΠΙΝIKΙΑ Prize urn containing palm branch and inscribed [OΛΥΜΠΙΑ] between two palm branches. Cf. SNG Levante 1467 (same rev. die). Cf. Ziegler 619/584 (Vs5/Rs2 - unrecorded die combination). A new die combination. Black patina. Very fine.

Ziegler's die corpus of coins from Anazarbus, Kaiser, Heer und Städtisches Geld. Untersuchungen zur Münzprägung von Anazarbos und anderer ostkilikischer Städte, is quite impressive, recording hundreds of coins then known to the author, complete with cross references, provenances, and excellent photographs. The scholarship is outstanding and the presentation is superb. Yet despite being a masterful reference, it is no longer comprehensive: hundreds of new dies have been discovered since it was published in 1993. A new study of the coinage of Anazarbus would thus be a challenge for an aspiring numismatist but a welcome addition to the literary corpus.
