ATTICA. Athens. Circa 430s-420s BC. Drachm (Silver, 14 mm, 4.27 g, 9 h). Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Attic helmet adorned with olive leaves and palmette. Rev. ΑΘΕ Owl standing to right, head facing the viewer; to left, olive sprig and crescent moon; all within incuse square. Agora 10e ff. SNG Copenhagen 41. Svoronos pl. 11, 20. A lovely toned piece struck on a broad flan. Minor mark on the obverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

ASIA MINOR OR THE LEVANT. Late 5th century BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 16.32 g, 1 h), possibly struck in the area of Gaza. Head of Athena to right, wearing Attic helmet, adorned with two olive leaves and a palmette. Rev. ΑΘΕ Owl standing to right, head facing; to left, olive sprig with two leaves and a berry. No certain parallel. An extraordinary piece, struck in a flamboyant, non-Attic style, with an unusually prominent owl, and a vigorous but coarse style of engraving. Some minor marks and bangs, otherwise, extremely fine.

Head of Athena Parthenos to right, wearing triple-crested Attic helmet adorned with Pegasos. Rev. Α-ΘΕ / ΜΙ/ΚΙ - / ΘΕΟ/ΦΡΑ Owl standing facing on amphora; to right, Nike driving chariot to right; on amphora, E; below amphora, ΣΩ (= contractor’s initials). Thompson 318b. A well-centered example struck on a broad flan. Minor marks, otherwise, extremely fine.
