Michael VIII Palaeologus, as Emperor of Nicaea, 1258-1261. Aspron Trachy (Silver, 25 mm, 2.04 g, 6 h), Magnesia. Χ|ΟΑΓ - Μ Nimbate and winged Archangel Michael standing facing, wearing military dress and resting his sword on his right shoulder. Rev. [Χ|Μ|ΔΕ] - ΟΑΓ|ΓΕ|ωP|Γ Michael standing facing, wearing divitision and loros and holding long cross-tipped scepter in his right hand, and St. George, nimbate, and dressed in military attire, standing facing, resting his left hand on his shield set on the ground to right, holding, jointly, a long labarum between them. DOC V 26 = DOC IV 2 = Grierson 1299. SB 2248. Extremely rare. Clear and with good details. Some striking flatness and marks, otherwise, very fine.
