THESSALY. Trikka. Circa 440-400 BC. Hemidrachm (Silver, 16 mm, 2.91 g, 2 h). Youthful hero, Thessalos, nude but for cloak and petasos hanging over his shoulder, striding right, holding a band in both his hands around the head of the forepart of a bull moving right. Rev. ΤΡ - ΙΚ - Κ - Α Forepart of bridled horse to right; all within very shallow incuse circle. BCD 775.3/5 var. A nicely centered and attractive coin. Some very slight areas of roughness and minor grafitto on the reverse, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From the Molard Collection, Switzerland.

Trikka produced an enormous coinage of hemidrachms during the late 5th century - they served as fractions alongside Larissa's almost as enormous coinage of drachms. It would be interesting if someone would attempt to do a die study: the number of different legend variants, including spacing and spelling is considerable. The way the small obverse die appears centered on the much broader flan is particularly pleasing.
