LYCAONIA. Iconium. Antonine Period, 138-192. Hemiassarion (Bronze, 15.5 mm, 2.79 g, 9 h). Bearded bust of Herakles to right wearing lion's skin around his neck and holding his club over his far shoulder. Rev. COL ICONI Perseus, nude, standing to right, holding the head of Medusa in his right hand and, in his left, harpa and chlamys. BMC 5. RPC IV.3 Online 4842. As Corinth, in error, RPC II 218 = Amandry An. M, p. 246. Extremely rare and quite intriguing with fascinating types. Very fine.

RPC II 218 attributes this to Corinth, but RPC IV.3 Online 4842 correctly places this type at Iconium. The condition of the examples known to the editors of the RPC II was too poor to allow a correct reading of the inscription; there read as COL COR. The inscriptions of the examples cited in RPC IV.3 are, on the contrary, quite clear. The mistake is quite understandable, since the legend could be read as COR and the reverse type of Perseus certainly has Corinthian connections.
